Tips from a Beaufort, SC Maternity & Newborn Photographer

Congratulations, mom-to-be! Welcoming a new life into the world is an unforgettable journey filled with excitement, anticipation, and—let’s be honest—a little bit of planning. As a maternity and newborn photographer based in Beaufort, South Carolina, I’ve had the joy of walking alongside so many families through this beautiful season. One of the most common questions I hear?
“What should I pack in my hospital bag?”
Over the years, I’ve gathered tips not just from my own experience, but also from my amazing clients. While everyone’s needs are unique, here’s a thoughtful, experience-based guide to packing your hospital bag that will help you feel prepared and confident when it’s time to head to the hospital.
For Mom
Your comfort is a top priority, both during labor and afterward. Think practical, comforting, and supportive. A few things to consider:
- A loose, breathable nightgown or a labor gown with front access if you plan to breastfeed.
- A cozy robe or cardigan.
- Non-slip socks or slippers.
- Nursing bras and postpartum underwear (the hospital provides mesh ones, but some moms prefer their own).
- A comfy “going home” outfit – think leggings or joggers and a soft tee or tunic.
- The essentials: toothbrush, toothpaste, face wash, hairbrush, dry shampoo.
- Lip balm and heavy-duty moisturizer (hospital air is super dry).
- Hair ties or headbands.
- Unscented lotion or massage oil.
- Your own towel and washcloth – hospital ones can be scratchy.
- Your own pillow with a colorful pillowcase (so it doesn’t get mistaken for a hospital one).
- A mini fan or cooling face mist – helpful during labor.
- A long phone charging cable or a power bank.
- A nursing pillow – especially helpful if this is your first time breastfeeding.
For Baby
Your little one’s debut requires a few essentials as well, but don’t stress about bringing too much—the hospital will often have the basics. Here are some must-haves:
- A couple of newborn-size outfits (many babies don’t fit 0–3 months just yet).
- A “going home” outfit for baby – consider the season and weather.
- Hats and no-scratch mittens.
- Socks or footed sleepers.
- A lightweight swaddle and one thicker blanket if it’s colder.
- A sentimental or heirloom blanket for first photos, if you like.
- A pacifier, even if you’re unsure if you’ll use it—just in case.
- A baby nail file (newborns often come out with sharp nails).
- A soft cloth or burp rag.
- A small toy or lovey – great for early bonding and photos.
- An outfit change just for in-hospital photos with your photographer, if you’ve booked a fresh 48 newborn session.
Don’t forget: Make sure the car seat is installed and checked ahead of time – you can usually schedule this with your local fire station.
For the Birthing Partner
Your birthing partner plays an important role in providing support and encouragement, so they’ll need to be prepared, too. Here’s what they might pack:
- Layers of comfortable clothing (temperatures can vary room to room).
- Refillable water bottle.
- Easy snacks (granola bars, trail mix, protein shakes, gum).
- Toothbrush and toiletries.
- Headphones for music or podcasts.
- A book, Kindle, or tablet.
- A small notebook to jot down special moments – or a note to baby.
- A list of people to text or call once baby arrives.
- A change of clothes for skin-to-skin contact.
- Eye mask and earplugs in case they want to rest during downtime.
- Their own pillow and a blanket for overnight stays.
You don’t need to overpack – just plan thoughtfully. Ask your provider what your hospital already offers so you’re not doubling up, and give yourself permission to bring a few comfort items that help you feel grounded and relaxed.
And when the time comes, don’t forget to capture those first moments with your little one – Whether it’s your first baby or your fifth, these moments deserve to be captured. I photograph newborns, milestone sessions, and maternity portraits in Beaufort, Port Royal, and the surrounding Lowcountry area.
Happy packing, and wishing you a peaceful, joy-filled delivery and a beautiful start to this new chapter. You’ve got this, mama!
