Creative Maternity Photography: How We Designed a Bold, Editorial-Inspired Session for Brittany | Bluffton SC Maternity Session

When most people picture maternity portraits, they imagine soft tones, flowy gowns, and natural light. And while those classic looks are beautiful (and still a big part of what I offer), creative maternity photography opens up a whole new world – where bold lighting, striking fabrics, and dramatic styling come together to create something unforgettable.

That’s exactly what we did for Brittany’s maternity session.

The Vision: Bold, Dreamy, and Unapologetically Her

Brittany came into the studio open to any concept, so I designed a look that would feel both glamorous and otherworldly – something that honored her journey through motherhood while also making her feel like a star. To guide the direction, I created a custom mood board and invited her feedback on colors, tones, and energy. Her only request? Something unique and full of personality. From there, the creative spark took off.

The lighting setup used Nanlite colored LEDs in teal and magenta to sculpt and shape the mood. Combined with reflective iridescent fabric and a soft gradient backdrop, we created an editorial vibe that felt luxe, feminine, and ethereal.

Styling the Session: Wardrobe, Hair & Makeup

Every piece showcased in Brittany’s session – including the stunning shimmering wrap – comes directly from our studio wardrobe, available to all clients. I believe no client should have to shop last minute for something that may not photograph well. That’s why I curate (and source, if needed) pieces that are made to flatter, flow, and catch light in the most magical way.

Professional hair and makeup were provided by the ever-talented Gigi, who brought Brittany’s glam look to life with a subtle sparkle and soft waves that perfectly matched the editorial aesthetic.
