The first day of school. Even reading that might bring tears to your eyes.
Whether your child has been in daycare or at home with you full-time, that moment when they walk into their classroom – tiny backpack bouncing, nerves and excitement in full swing – is a huge milestone. One moment you’re trying to survive sleepless nights and snack requests, and the next you’re packing lunch boxes and laying out little shoes by the door.
As a family and child photographer based in Beaufort, SC, I’ve had the honor of watching so many little ones grow – from squishy newborns in the studio to big kids full of confidence, ready to take on the world. And if you’re feeling a mix of emotions about this next chapter – you’re not alone.

Let’s Talk About the Jitters (Yours and Theirs)
First things first – nerves are totally normal. Your little one might not fully understand what’s about to happen, and that’s okay. Sitting down together to read picture books about starting school can help open the door to questions, feelings, and reassuring conversations.
And parents? You’re allowed to feel all the feels. You’ve been their safe space, their everyday comfort. Letting go (even a little) is a big deal. If you get misty-eyed when you see them in that tiny school shirt, just know – you’re in good company.
Start the Routine Early
A week or two before school starts, begin easing into the new schedule. Shift bedtime a little earlier, try breakfast at the time they’ll need to eat during the school week, and maybe even pack a few “school-style” lunches for fun practice.
This helps your child transition gently and gives everyone in the house time to adjust. Bonus: it can help you figure out how long really needed to get out the door on time!
The Morning Of: Stay Grounded
Here’s the trick – prep the night before. Lay out clothes, shoes, lunch, backpack, and yes… your keys (because there’s always a rogue key situation when you least need it).
Give yourself a minute to be present in the moment. Take a quick photo of your little one on the porch or in front of the door. Snap a selfie together if you can. These photos become some of the most cherished because they mark the beginning of something big.
Celebrate After School
Once the big day is over, do something simple to mark the occasion – a trip to the park, ice cream, their favorite dinner, or a movie night at home.
Ask how their day went, but don’t stress if the answer is “I don’t remember” or “it was fine.” Kids process big changes in their own time. Let them lead the conversation, and be available for whatever little moments they choose to share.
Want to Capture the Moment Professionally?
If you’d like to commemorate this season with something more intentional, I offer Back to School mini sessions right here in the Beaufort, Bluffton, and Hilton Head area. These are perfect for celebrating the start of a new chapter – with photos that go beyond just the morning rush snapshot.
Reach out to schedule your session and let’s create something that you’ll look back on long after that first backpack is outgrown.
